The American Horticultural Society (AHS) is looking for an enthusiastic and creative Editor to oversee the bi-monthly publication of their print magazine aimed at both home gardeners and horticultural experts. As a key member of the AHS leadership team, the Editor will collaborate closely with the national Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) and manage the award-winning magazine, The American Gardener (TAG).

Position Overview

The American Horticultural Society (AHS) is looking for an enthusiastic and creative Editor to oversee the bi-monthly publication of their print magazine aimed at both home gardeners and horticultural experts. As a key member of the AHS leadership team, the Editor will collaborate closely with the national Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) and manage the award-winning magazine, The American Gardener (TAG).

The Editor is responsible for shaping the content and overseeing the design and production of TAG. This role involves planning, creating, and producing a magazine that educates readers on a variety of horticultural topics, while also reflecting and promoting AHS's mission, programs, and brand. The magazine is published six times a year and is a major benefit for AHS members. The Editor reports directly to the President/CEO.

About The American Horticultural Society

Established in 1922, AHS is a national organization with a membership of 22,000. Its programs include educational sessions, the Great American Gardeners Awards, the National Children & Youth Garden Symposium, a Travel Study program, and a Reciprocal Garden Network. The AHS website (www.ahsgardening.org) will be updated in summer 2024, providing resources for horticulturists, gardeners, and other stakeholders. The Society also maintains a strong presence on social media.

Based at River Farm in Alexandria, VA, the AHS headquarters sits on a 26-acre property with views of the Potomac River. By joining the AHS team, the Editor will help promote gardening and horticultural practices that contribute to thriving communities and a sustainable planet.

Key Responsibilities

While other tasks may arise, the following outlines the core functions of the position:

**-**Oversee the planning, development, and timely production of a bi-monthly magazine that is sent to members and serves as a primary communication tool.

**-**Work with an Editorial Advisory Board and a small team to create an annual editorial calendar. Develop article ideas, assign writing tasks to freelancers, negotiate article payments and rights, and maintain relationships with contributors.

**-**Produce engaging and diverse content that can be shared across social media platforms to increase reach and impact.

**-**Develop and implement strategies to connect with and grow the audience while fostering loyalty.

**-**Explore innovative storytelling methods to attract a broader audience.

**-**Regularly update the CEO and other department heads to ensure the magazine aligns with AHS's programs and mission.

**-**Supervise two editorial staff members, managing project priorities, workflow, and performance.

**-**Prepare and manage the annual budget for the magazine department.

**-**Review and edit articles and other materials as needed, and write content when required.

**-**Choose and evaluate vendors for various services.

**-**Lead the hiring process for new editorial staff, including interns.

**-**Ensure all content meets AHS standards for accuracy, integrity, and transparency.

**-**Stay updated on new technologies and trends in digital publishing to enhance the magazine's online presence.

**-**Seek opportunities for innovation that align with AHS's mission.

Additional Duties

**-**Support other departments with planning, editing, and proofreading of brochures, mailings, and other publications.

**-**Participate in leadership team meetings and contribute to planning, budgeting, and operations.

**-**Attend industry events for networking, generating article ideas, and recruiting potential contributors.

**-**Serve as a liaison to the Book Awards Committee.

Qualifications

**-**Bachelor's or Master's degree in journalism, English, or a related field.

**-**A genuine passion for gardening or plants is essential.

**-**Knowledge of natural sciences, plant sciences, or environmental science is required.

**-**Experience with garden-related publications, horticultural coursework, or practical gardening is a plus.

**-**At least five years of experience in print magazine editing.

**-**Familiarity with digital media, social media, and emerging digital platforms; experience with digital content creation is a bonus.

**-**Ability to manage both short-term and long-term projects effectively.

**-**Excellent organizational, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.

**-**Proven track record in managing on-site, hybrid, and remote employees.

**-**Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat; experience with Adobe InDesign is a plus.

Compensation

This is a full-time salaried position with benefits. The salary range is $105,000 to $115,000, depending on experience. The role is typically based in Alexandria, VA, but remote or hybrid work options are available.
