Spark Your Electrical Career with This Useful Program
Embarking on a career in the electrical field can be both exciting and daunting. Many individuals considering a shift in their career paths or entering a trade for the first time may feel apprehensive about whether the Electrical Trade is the right fit for them. To address these concerns, we offer a comprehensive solution through our Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Program. This program is designed to provide you with the essential theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience necessary to excel as an Electrical Apprentice.
Overview of the Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Program
The Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Program at Trillium College is a well-rounded training course that equips you with the foundational expertise required to enter the electrical field confidently. The program combines virtual lectures led by experienced instructors with in-person labs conducted at our specialized training locations. This dual approach ensures that you gain a thorough understanding of electrical concepts while also developing the practical skills needed for real-world applications
What is a Pre-Apprenticeship Program?
In the electrical trade, gaining hands-on experience can be challenging due to stringent provincial regulations governing compulsory trades. These regulations often limit the opportunities for individuals to demonstrate their aptitude and skills to potential employers. Traditional apprenticeship programs typically require a Journeyperson to supervise and mentor you while you learn the trade, which can be costly and may present safety concerns. This creates a reluctance among many contractors to take on new apprentices.
The Pre-Apprenticeship Program addresses these challenges by providing you with foundational skills and safety certifications from the outset. By completing this program, you effectively reduce the economic and safety-related concerns that apprenticeships typically pose. This prepares you to enter the trade with a strong background in basic skills and safety practices, making you a more attractive candidate for potential employers.
Program Focus Areas
Our program covers a broad range of topics to ensure you receive comprehensive training in the electrical trade:
-Circuit Fundamentals: Learn the basic principles of electrical circuits, including how to design and troubleshoot them effectively.
-Electromagnetic Fields (EMF): Understand the principles of EMF and their implications in electrical installations.
-Lab Fundamentals: Gain hands-on experience with essential lab techniques and equipment used in the electrical field.
-Canadian Electrical Code Part I & Blueprints: Familiarize yourself with the national electrical code and how to read and interpret electrical blueprints.
-Safety: Acquire crucial safety knowledge to ensure safe working practices in various electrical environments.
-Electrical Installations: Learn the techniques and best practices for installing electrical systems and components.
-Communication: Develop effective communication skills necessary for working with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
-MS Office Applications: Become proficient in using Microsoft Office applications to manage documentation and reports.
-Safety Certificates: Obtain certifications in various safety protocols, including WHMIS, ladder safety, lockout and tagout procedures, confined space entry, and working at heights.
Certification and Employment Opportunities
Upon successful completion of the program, you will be certified in several key safety areas, including WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), Ladder Safety, Lockout and Tagout, Confined Space Entry, and Working at Heights. These certifications are highly valued in the electrical industry and will enhance your employability.
Graduates of the Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Program are well-prepared to advance to the next stage of their careers as Electrical Apprentices. This program provides the equivalent of Level 1 training according to Interprovincial Standards (Red Seal), making you highly marketable and in demand within the industry.
Advancing in the Apprenticeship Process
The apprenticeship process is designed to allow you to earn while you learn. As an apprentice, you will work towards completing a total of 9,000 hours of practical experience. This hands-on experience, combined with successfully passing the licensing exam, will enable you to achieve Journeyperson status.
Upon completing the Trillium College Electrical Pre-Apprenticeship Program, you can receive credit for 578 hours towards the 9,000 hours required. This can significantly shorten the time needed to complete your apprenticeship. You will then need to secure a full-time or part-time paid position to fulfill the remaining hours required for your apprenticeship.
To progress through the apprenticeship levels, you will need to attend a Trade Delivery Agent (TDA) session. During your 90-day probationary period, your employer must decide to register you as an apprentice. Additionally, you will need to contact the Ministry of Labour, Training & Skills Development to register online as an apprentice. This registration is free of charge.
Admission Requirements
To enroll in the Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Program, you must meet the following admission requirements:
-Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD): A high school diploma is required for entry into the program.
-Mature Student Status: If you do not have an OSSD, you may qualify for admission based on your mature student status and relevant experience.
By completing this program, you will be well-equipped with the skills and certifications needed to succeed in the electrical trade, setting you on a path toward a rewarding and fulfilling career.
